G stands for General Audiences, i.e. everyone can view. As long as there is no objectionable material, then it is considered safe for everyone, from baby to grandama, and therefore G rated. If you can pull this one off in a TU entry (and still be valid), my hat goes off to you! ^_~ Top
PG stands for Parental Guidance, meaning there may be some things that might be too much for little kids, or some things parents just don't want their kids to see. In other words, it's up to parents to decide if it's safe for their little ones, but it's generally not that much worse than G. For example, if you took a G movie and added death in some way and it would (more than likely) be bumped up to PG. *shrug* Top
This one suggest (to parents) that it isn't suitable for anyone under 13 years old. Why? Because of any adult situations that may be alluded to (or more) and/or violence, language (cussing, vulgarity, whatever), etc. Top
R stands for Restricted and are meant for adult audiences. Now, considering R movies today, I'm not sure exactly how to classify this. ^^;; Adult situations, excessive violence, foul language, sexual situations (though nowadays sex scenes in R movies tend to be just shy of soft p*rn ^^;;), etc. In other words, not for kids or teens. (at least young ones, anyhow) Top
NC-17 refers to content not appropriate for anyone under 17. (Okay, so I don't know what NC stands for! What of it? ^^;;) Explicit sex and violence and "uncomfortable" subject matter fall under this rating. It is the catch all of ratings. (except for p*rn, which uses X's) This is the highest rating accepted at TU. Top
I know this isn't the universal rating system, but it's the only one I know. The descriptions I used are based on my own observations. However, you can find a clearer explanation at www.filmratings.com. Just go to Questions and Answers. ^^ They do better job by far! ^^;; Top
How do I decide on a rating?
Good question. You'll just have to use your best judgment. If you're not sure, pick the next highest. Better safe than sorry, right? ^_~(ex. You think it might be an R, but not sure if the level of graphic content R-level or if it should be higher.) Of course, anything with substance abuse (ie. drugs) should be at least PG-13. Top
